Like most roguelike deckbuilders, Griftlands was fated to draw parallels to Slay the Spire from the moment it was conceived, and in this particular case the comparison isn’t unfounded the two games share a lot of DNA. Should a player die, they'll get the chance to return with boons from a previous run, and a game-wide progression system makes characters more powerful the more runs they've been taken on. Griftlands is a deck-building roguelite where you negotiate, fight, steal or otherwise persuade others to get your way. It's standard roguelike deckbuilding stuff, but it's executed in a captivating way. Every decision is important, be it the jobs you take, the friends you make, or the cards you collect. ![]() There's little not to like about Griftlands provided card battling is of interest. The game's graphics are smooth and charming, with many of the recurring characters distinguished by nuanced personality traits and representation. Perhaps over a series of dozens of runs through the same narrative, things might begin to grow tiresome, but over a few dozen hours the game provides enough variety with its characters, deckbuilding strategies, and story options that it seems like a concern for much longer into the game's life cycle. Discharge Pistol: Kashio gains counter every second turn.Suitcase Grenade: an extra attack for Kashio each turn that hits Sal and all her allies.Blast Chamber: it gives Kashio an extra attack each turn and, if taken by Sal, gives an extra action point each turn. One thing Griftlands does manage to avoid is the implementation of more complex mechanics that are significantly harder to corral into a workable deck philosophy, something that isn't necessarily a bad thing in games with quick play sessions but would be unproductively frustrating were it present here.It really matters what items Kashio has, so here are a few she must absolutely not have: Strategies can be unproductively complex for those looking for a casual pick-up-and-play sort of game, and the game's narrative focus means each run tends to last significantly longer than it might in similar titles like Loop Hero. Not ideal, because counter can really shred Sal's health if she's attempting an infinite combo. ![]() On the other hand, the Rentorian Force Glaive and Support Beacon should probably be given to Kashio if possible. Both are fairly easy to deal with and not super great for Sal, so give them up. Of special note is the Hologram Belt, which creates Kashio Clones each turn so the player has to try and find the real one. It's obnoxious, but not a super high priority. Remember, Kashio hates Sal and will exclusively attack her, so pets and allies won't mitigate damage. Shills are one of the most important parts of Griftlands.
